Meet the Writer Wednesday: L.P. Maxa

It’s that time of the week again–Wednesday when we meet new writers! There are a lot of writers out there, so how do you find the latest talent? By reading this weekly post!

FullSizeRenderToday let’s welcome L.P. Maxa!

What’s your favorite quote about writing?

I have two. The first is a little funny.

“I write though whether that helps me keep my sanity or makes me lose it I will never know.” –unknown

More soulful.

“The words were on their way, and when they arrived, she would hold them in her hands like clouds, and she would wring them out like rain.” -The Book Thief

I know everyone’s unique and draws their inspiration from different places and situations–how do you tap into yours?

EVERYTHING inspires me! Songs I hear, experiences I’ve had, people I know. Play Nice was inspired by one of my good friends, her brother is the drummer in an up and coming band. Their bond and love for each other is what gave me the original idea for the book. Of course, once I started writing it developed a mind of its own. Never Ever, which is currently on Kindle, was inspired by an actual yearly girls trip my girlfriends from college and I take. I’m toying around with another book right now that was inspired by a Miranda Lambert song I heard on Pandora. Pretty much anything can spark an idea in my brain.

Do you have a character of yours that you feel like you could write forever? One you absolutely love?

Hands down my favorite character is Taylor Hill, he is the male lead in Never Ever. I love him! He is cocky, funny, sarcastic and of course sexy and gorgeous. I enjoy writing him because he is super witty, but super sweet also. One of those perfect self-proclaimed players that just can’t help but fall for the girl.

Brice Huntington is a secondary character in Happy Place. That character is based loosely on someone I know and adore, so he was fun to write as well. So fun, in fact, that I think he might get his own book eventually.

Amidst this summer weather, the travel bug’s already bitten me–where would you take your dream vacation?

Every year my whole family goes down to Seaside, Florida. My parents are building a house there as we speak, I’m so excited! I absolutely LOVE it there. As soon as I take one step outside of the airport I breathe a sigh of relief. My novel Happy Place has some parts that take place there, that’s how much I enjoy being in Seaside. My husband and I actually got married on the beach down from my parent’s neighborhood. And last summer we took our daughter and it was the first time she saw the ocean. Plus, it’s not too far, I am the WORST flier. I hate to fly. But if I could get over my aversion to flight, Greece would be a really cool place to go. Oh! And Ireland, I have an EXTREME weakness for Irish accents.

What project are you most excited about right now?

Well, I am currently working on Play Fair, the second book in The Devil’s Share series. It’s going really well, which is a relief because it got off to a rocky start. So I’m pretty pumped to get that to my editor. Side note: Play Nice, book one will be released on July 2nd!! Also, a really good friend and I started writing a book together. It’s a lot more tragic and emotional than what I normally write so I’m excited for the challenge.

Do you have a favorite TV show you’re watching right now?

How can I possibly choose?! I was a HUGE Sons of Anarchy fan, so I’m still dealing with the loss of that show. But I am a Walking Dead (Norman Reedus) super fan as well. My friends think my crush on Norman Reedus is weird, but I’ve had a thing for him going back to the Boondock Saints days. (Told you I had a thing for Irish accents) I also really enjoy Nashville and The Originals. Oh, and I’m binge watching Justified on Amazon Prime right now too.

Oh man, I just started tearing through Sons of Anarchy on Netflix–so good. What about on your bookshelf? Anything awesome you’re reading?

I just read the first two books in the Off Campus Series by Elle Kennedy. That series is a little more YA than I usually read, but I really enjoyed them. I love the Black Dagger Brotherhood series by JR Ward, those are all good. The Indebted series by Pepper Winter is crazy dark, but I couldn’t put them down! As I was reading the first book, I kept thinking “Okay, I can’t read this, this is too weird.” But, I finished it. And then when the next one came out, I read that one too. I’m kind of addicted now.

And now my favorite question–what’s your astrological sign?

I’m a Capricorn. But, I was born like 4 weeks early, so technically I should be an Aquarius. I think I’m like an in between signs person. Is that a thing? If it is, then I am.

Are there any pet peeves that will make you put a book down?

That’s easy. I cannot stand when a book doesn’t not have enough DIALOGUE! I want to read the characters interacting with each other. I get so bored reading about feelings and scenery. I try really hard in my books to let feeling come to light in the dialogue. Let the characters figure it out for themselves. When one person feels one way, but the other person never knows it, I lose my mind. I can’t deal with that. I like direct. Also, female characters like Anastasia Steele drive me crazy. “Oh you bought me a car? I can’t accept.” Of course you can. What chick is going to start sleeping with a sexy billionaire and then turn down extravagant gifts? Not this chick.

Where can your readers find you?

Author:

I split my time writing and working my day job as a massage therapist. If it’s a creative pursuit though, chances are I’ve dabbled in it. Hell, I’ve played around with soapmaking, beer brewing, cupcake baking, tea blending and everything else under the midday sun. At the end of the day, my constant is always reading, writing and editing. I’m an Aries-Taurus cusp–which to any astrology buffs should tell you plenty. I hit the East Coast convention circuit pretty hard and chances are, you can find me vending for Solstice Brews while simultaneously promoting my books.
