Meet the Writer Wednesday- Carolyn LaRoche

It’s that time again, to meet a new talented writer! All the work it takes to put into the books you read means countless hours of writing, editing, and promotion from these authors. This is a chance to get to know the one behind the book.

Today let’s welcome Carolyn LaRoche!

carolynlarocheWhat’s your favorite quote on writing?

My favorite quote actually hangs on the wall of my son’s bedroom. He is a huge baseball fan and the poster is of Babe Ruth with the words “Never let the fear of striking out get in your way.” There is so much rejection in this business that it is easy to give up. Or, you can just keep on getting up to bat until eventually you get that homerun.

When you sit down to write, where do you draw inspiration from?

I’m not sure if there is anyone thing that inspires me. There are times that I binge write- even in the middle of the night my brain is plotting and developing characters. Then there are times when I can go days without the interest or the energy to even open a document let alone tell a story. When I get into those sort of lulls, I tend to read a lot. After a while my characters get jealous and start talking again.

Out of all the characters you’ve written, is there one that sticks with you? One you feel you could write about forever?

Probably my most favorite character can be found in Homeland Security. Actually she appears in every book of the series. I call her Aunt Clara as she is the aunt to Logan James and mother of twins Kaiden and Keegan James. Clara is the sort of woman who calls it like she sees it and says whatever comes to mind in every situation. She is independent, can handle a shot gun like a pro and offers a good deal of comic relief to each of the stories she appears in. The James men would consider her the glue that holds them all together.

If you got the chance to vacation anywhere, where would you go?

If I could go anywhere in the world I would visit Italy. My mother’s family is from Italy and we grew up appreciating that heritage. It would be fantastic to try and trace that lineage back a few generations.

What project are you most excited for right now?

I am thrilled with my new release Homeland Security. It’s getting a lot of great feedback from reviewers. Who doesn’t love a sexy man in uniform? I also have another series in edits right now, the first book Undercover in Six Inch Stilettos will be released in early November.

When you’re not writing, what shows do you watch?

Castle. I love that show! I have been a fan of Nathan Fillion since his Firefly days. One of the best shows that never made it on television. He was made to play the role of Richard Castle. I joke my husband sometimes that he is my Beckett- the cop that acts as my muse for story-telling. You will find a little bit of him in every one of my books.

Nathan Fillion’s just fantastic : ) Do you have any books you’d recommend?

I recently discovered author Jill Shalvis by reading her book Second Chance Summer. Every so often my mom will take me to the book store and tell me to pick something out. That day I was looking to try something different than my usual romantic suspense and mysteries. The book was amazing- I couldn’t put it down! I am also a fan of Gena Showalter’s new contemporary series, Original Heartbreakers. I’ve read two of those so far and am about to start a third.

What’s your astrological sign?

I am a Scorpio. I don’t really know much about astrology but people tell me I fit the Scorpio profile very well.

Do you have any pet peeves when you begin reading a book? Anything that might make you stop reading?

If a book doesn’t catch my attention in the first couple of pages, I won’t bother with it. I don’t want to read a lot of flowery words and long descriptions. There needs to be action from the get go. There just isn’t enough time in my life to muddle through a story I am not instantly drawn into. I want a book that forces me to stay up way past my bedtime because I just have to know what happens next.

Where can readers find you and your book?

The easiest place to find me is on Amazon. Several of my books are enrolled in Kindle Unlimited and are free to read for members. I also hang out on Facebook and Twitter pretty regularly. If you stop by my blog, I usually have something going on there about once per week as well.

Fool me once… shame on me. Fool me twice?

Well, Katie has no plans to let that old saying play out in her love life. After being duped by a man who only used her to further his political agenda, Katie has no place in her life for love, for men. She can live with the broken heart, with knowing Nathan slept with her best friend. But when she’s accused of domestic terrorism, thanks to Nathan, she’s forced to accept the help of Homeland Security Agent Kaiden James. Once he gets her off the hook she’ll send him on his way and pick up the pieces of her broken life—no matter how kind, intelligent, or sinfully sexy he is.

When duty called him away from his cousin’s wedding to deal with a high profile case, Kaiden James could hardly believe his eyes. The last person he’d expected to see handcuffed to a table was the lovely nurse that had taken care of his gunshot wound last year. Memories of the sponge bath she’d given him had kept him awake more than a few nights since. Working with Katie will put his professionalism to the test.

Will Kaiden once again let duty come before love?

I split my time writing and working my day job as a massage therapist. If it’s a creative pursuit though, chances are I’ve dabbled in it. Hell, I’ve played around with soapmaking, beer brewing, cupcake baking, tea blending and everything else under the midday sun. At the end of the day, my constant is always reading, writing and editing. I’m an Aries-Taurus cusp–which to any astrology buffs should tell you plenty. I hit the East Coast convention circuit pretty hard and chances are, you can find me vending for Solstice Brews while simultaneously promoting my books.
