Music Monday- Summer Fling

Just another Music Monday!

This time we’re welcoming MJ Compton to talk about the musical inspiration for her book, Summer Fling!

I mix a sound track for every book I even think about writing. It’s one of my favorite parts of my writing process. Creating the perfect mix is a kick. I wear out the songs while driving, while working at Day Job, and while brainstorming. The music keeps me in the story. It’s wonderful to go back to a soundtrack while editing, because the songs remind me of little things in the story.

My current release, Summer Fling, is the story of two people who met one summer at a minor league baseball stadium, had a brief affair, and separated, only to run into each other again seven years later. Seven secret-filled years later.

“Boys of Summer” by Don Henley. A man tells a woman that he will always love her, despite her past, and that he doesn’t’ understand what happened to split them up. The phrase“Boys of Summer” is also a reference to baseball players, and since the hero is a Major League Pitcher, the song fits on several levels.

“Anything But Mine” by Kenny Chesney. The summer is over; he’s heading home. No commitment. And yet he has feelings for her.

“Girls Lie Too” by Terri Clark. The heroine has secrets. Men aren’t the only ones who “bend it, break it, stretch it some.”

“Favorite Year” by the Dixie Chicks. Looking back at their time together makes the hero and heroine realize that was one of the best times of their lives.

“Sweet Caroline” by Neil Diamond. Played at Fenway Park (Boston Red Sox home stadium) at nearly every game, this song has become tied to baseball. And the heroine’s name is Caroline. (Coincidence, really!). “Good times never seemed so good.”

My next project is the third book in my “Toke Lobo & the Pack” werewolf series. Omega Moon Rising has been contracted, and I’m earlobe deep in revisions now. That soundtrack includes the theme song from the TV series True Blood.

Caroline Maplethorpe’s respectable life is threatened when the man who shared her secret past as a plaything to a minor league baseball team reappears with demands she’s not sure she can satisfy.

Caroline Maplethorpe spent a summer as plaything for a minor league baseball team…and oh, how Win Winston played. Seven years later, she’s respectable, and he’s in the big leagues. Now that he’s found her again, he still wants her in a major way. But their second-chance relationship attracts too much publicity, and the third member of their long-ago fling threatens to destroy the respectable life Caroline so carefully reconstructed after that crazy summer.

MJ Compton Bio

MJ Compton grew up near Cardiff, New York, a place best known for its giant, which inspired her to create her own fiction.

Although her 30-year career in local television included such highlights as being bitten by a lion, preempting a US President for a college basketball game, giving a three-time world champion boxer a few black eyes, a mention in the Drudge Report, and meeting her husband, MJ never lost her dream of writing her own stories.

MJ still lives in upstate New York with her husband. She’s a member of Romance Writers of America and Central New York Romance Writers. Music and cooking are two of her passions, and she enjoys baseball and college basketball, but she’s primarily focused on wine . . . and writing.

I split my time writing and working my day job as a massage therapist. If it’s a creative pursuit though, chances are I’ve dabbled in it. Hell, I’ve played around with soapmaking, beer brewing, cupcake baking, tea blending and everything else under the midday sun. At the end of the day, my constant is always reading, writing and editing. I’m an Aries-Taurus cusp–which to any astrology buffs should tell you plenty. I hit the East Coast convention circuit pretty hard and chances are, you can find me vending for Solstice Brews while simultaneously promoting my books.
