Preview Paragraph: The Iron Legacy

I twitched as a drop of sweat trickled down my back. “I do declare, is that a vote of confidence in my leadership skills?”

He crossed his arms over his chest and fixed me with a look. “It’s a vote of confidence in your ability to hoodwink the most cynical man. I’ve never met a more manipulative son of a bitch in my life.”

“Why, that’s the sweetest thing you’ve ever said to me.” A slow smile rolled to my face. He wasn’t wrong. Interpreting people came easily for me, and when my survival as a kid hinged on using said knowledge to my favor, I learned how to work around even the most stubborn bastards. Given a little patience and observation, most people delivered their tells early in a conversation. A little bruising of the ego meant nothing to me if I escaped alive.

Music Monday- Hunting for Spring

Hey darlings! Special edition of Music Monday today to showcase my latest release, due to hit e-shelves tomorrow!

Today I’ll be sharing with you the musical inspiration for my urban fantasy, Hunting for Spring.

KM_HuntingforSpring

Hooked by Seabound

This introduces a long running theme for the playlist of this book–industrial and EBM music. That’s right, kids, I was an alternative club kid. It actually makes sense since I spent my club nights in Philly, so the memories involved helped me write the settings. There’s a great sense of sadness in a lot of these songs and the electronic element reminds me of the city.

Inside of You, In Spite of You by Thoushaltnot

A surprisingly sexy song with the low vocals and pulsing beat. So you can bet your bottom dollar I played it a lot while writing the sexytime scenes in this book. Brenna and Conor have this undercurrent in their relationship, both with jagged edges after living their lives as loners. The magnetism of this song worked so well for those scenes!

Six Underground by Sneaker Pimps

This song does a spectacular job in setting up a gritty city vibe. The trip-hop tune has a casual, coolness that helps establish tone in urban fantasy so well. One of the things I love most about urban fantasy stories are the cool, slick-talking characters throughout, ones that dabble in darkness a bit more than the average.

Illusion by VNV Nation

This song is fragile and beautiful, one that sort of reminds me of Brenna. She’s such a lonely, broken character who’s so afraid to trust. Her prickly shell is just an illusion for the sweet, scorching woman within and Conor manages to elicit that from her at the very beginning. Since she’s lived on the outskirts of both the human and supernatural world, she’s careful to whom she grants her trust.

My World by Colony 5

I actually hadn’t listened to this band until I was making this playlist–a friend of mine gave the suggestion. Colony 5 was a perfect fit for this piece, a dark, fast beat that took me to dark street alleys and the shadows of monsters lurking in the night. It worked well for a lot of the action sequences, where Conor and Brenna are taking names and kicking ass.

For the rest of the playlist, as well as all of my other book ones, find me on Spotify: KMcIntyreMT

Preview Paragraph: Hunting for Spring

Shadows spilled onto the ground even during midday. This neighborhood wasn’t one he’d chance at night unless armed with a flamethrower and a dozen hunters at his back. Conor paused with his hand on the door frame as he listened. Apart from the dog’s thick breaths, he didn’t hear any other movement or sudden noises. The place smelled like peat moss, and a slight scent of tinny blood tickled his nose. He slunk inside with cautious steps, and his senses reeled in overdrive.

The whine sounded again, coming from the right. He flicked on his keychain flashlight and shone it around the place. Broken dishes cluttered a rotting table, and piles of withered leaves and crumpled papers matted together to gum the corners.

Droplets of blood littered the carpet.

Weekly Word Count #31

Working so hard on the Hunting for Spring release! I hope it ends up meeting everyone’s hopes and expectations!

Word Count: 2,420

What story I’m working on: Night Awakens

What I’m editing/marketing: Low word count is due to a lot of editing this week–I made a plan to finish the Iron Legacy by the end of the month, which means a little less writing but a lot more editing! And as for marketing, I’m promoting the hell out of Hunting for Spring, since it comes out next week!

Line of the week:

“Well at least that wasn’t completely miserable,” Darren muttered, his voice echoing along the wide empty corridor.

“Yes, oh King of Introductions. Next time I think I’ll handle it myself.” I rolled my eyes.

Olivia Night

Olivia Night, a fictional character herself, has always been an avid reader and writer. She found the romance genre in college and has never been able to get enough. One sleepless night, the main characters of Book One in her Seduction series sprang from her head fully formed. They demanded she tell their story; so she did. As they revealed themselves, so did two other intriguing characters. Those characters convinced her to give them their own books because their stories were worth telling too. And so Olivia suddenly became a romance author. When Olivia is not writing, she has the best job in the world, which, too, will remain a secret. In her free time, she reads, write, runs, or is, most likely, out emulating Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Olivia lives in one of the most diverse and vibrant cities in the U.S.—Baltimore. She lives with her cat, which she is convinced was a gladiator in his past life. Olivia plans to continue being awesome at this thing called life. Really, that’s her only goal.

Shelli Rosewarne

Shelli Rosewarne had always had a dream in the back of her head about wanting to be a writer, from the time she was handing in ten page stories at primary school and driving her teachers crazy. However, like with so many things, life and paying the bills got in the way and she worked in various jobs from call centers to shops to offices. She eventually realized that life is too short not to try and follow your dreams, and has since had her first stand alone novella published with Breathless Press, along with several submissions in anthologies, another novel contracted for later in the year and various works in progress in the pipeline. Yup, she’s having to pinch herself as well!
She currently lives in Edinburgh with her long-suffering fiancé and slightly psycho cat. When not writing she loves reading, music and photography.
