Indie Recs: October Syndrome

One thing Lana Moon has a fantastic grasp on is YA dialogue. She writes incredibly realistic YA characters, and October Syndrome is proof of this. Combine that with a haunted house investigation, and I’m sold. This was a blast of a book with a really sweet romance that I enjoyed, combined with wonderful, spooky elements. Don’t miss out!

Indie Recs: When Dark Falls

I had stumbled on When Dark Falls by Pippa Jay, and thoroughly enjoyed this superhero read. The worldbuilding is top notch imaginative, and I loved the way the mystery of the story unwound while the romance built. It’s definitely a stand out scifi romance book and well worth your time.

In a city where Dark Technologies Inc. now runs the show, Kadie Williams has more immediate concerns than the fall of Blaze, their guardian superhero. Almost every morning for the last few months she’s woken up with cuts and bruises on her body, and no idea how she got them. There are no nightmares. No evidence that she sleepwalks, or any sign of a break in. And nothing to tell her who’s been cleaning up after her. As just one of thousands of civilians conscripted to slave away in the labs of Professor Dark, she knew there’d be trouble ahead. But she never expected it to be so bad, or so personal.

Desperate for answers, Kadie looks to the new defender of the night, the only person who can hinder the total domination of Professor Dark—Nocturnelle. The mysterious vigilante superhero came from nowhere with her cybernetic sidekick Shadow, set on putting an end to the brutality of Dark’s regime. But as his laboratories work on a new secret super-weapon, Nocturnelle and Shadow may not be enough to save Nephopolis…or to save Kadie either.

Indie Recs: Play Nice

If you’re in the mood for a rockstar romance, LP Maxa is your girl. In her book Play Nice, we’re introduced to the band the Devil’s Share and holy hell, what a fun group they are! The group is memorable, the story engaging, and the romance hot, so it was definitely a read I ended up breezing through and wanting more. Luckily, there IS more…

25839111

Rock a stadium. Bang a chick. Repeat. As lead singer of The Devil’s Share, Dash Conner could get anything or anyone he wanted—until he met Lexi Grant.

MONEY. FAME. WHISKEY. SEX.

For Dash Conner, lead singer of The Devil’s Share, everything he wanted was his for the asking. Whiskey. Drugs. Money. Sex. But not Lexi Grant. For the first time since he picked up a guitar, a girl was actually demanding he woo her. For a chance with her, Dash would do that and more.

Lexi Grant was no groupie. Just because the biggest rock star in the world smiled at her didn’t mean she had to fall into bed with him—but it was going to be awfully hard to resist that impish smile and those tatted abs. Surely one night of fun wouldn’t hurt anyone.

Unless that night ends with a broken condom.

For Lexi and Dash, that’s just the beginning. Add an overly affectionate pit bull, a missing guitarist, a house full of sorority girls, a junkie ex-bandmate and an extreme aversion to Jäger, and it’s either a recipe for disaster or true love.

Indie Recs: On A Red Horse

Today I’d like to recommend On a Red Horse, by Monica Corwin!

One of my favorite things about Monica Corwin’s work that I’ve read so far is her inclusion of characters with disability/deformity, as well as her well developed female leads. On A Read Horse was a story I found myself instantly enamored with, and as I read on, I only grew to love it more. Not only am I a sucker for Greek mythology, but I really enjoyed the way she handled a character dealing with depression in this book. I’m super excited to read the rest of the series.

Scarlet needs a new job, but Horseman of the Apocalypse doesn’t sound good on a resume. Three years ago she followed her companions to Earth in an effort to live human lives. But the moment she left her husband Tyr she knew life wouldn’t be worth living. Lonely and longing for her husband, Scarlet is on a path of destruction that could endanger all the riders.

Tyr, god of justice, hunts his wife across the realms. From Hell to the Golden Throne, he travels until he finds her working as a phone operator. Scarlet is no longer the woman he fell in love with, and he is determined to bring that woman back to him if it takes the rest of eternity.

Even though the Horsemen live on Earth, they are still responsible for guarding four seals that can unleash the Apocalypse. When a prophecy is awoken by a deity who only has her own interests at heart, they must go on the defensive to keep their homes on Earth and protect the seals. If even one seal opens, it will start a chain reaction that will force the Horsemen to take up their mantles and destroy the new lives they’ve worked so hard to build.

Indie Recs: The Long Way Home

Whenever I have a friend who likes historical romance, one of the first names to come to mind for me is Jessica Cale. I had the privilege of reading the third book in her Southwark Saga, The Long Way Home, and found it entirely enjoyable. She has a finesse with details, and lush, descriptive writing that does a service to the genre. Alice and Jack’s tale is a sweet one, and well worth the read!

The Long Way Home, Book 3 in The Southwark Saga by historical romance author, Jessica Cale is a magical, adult fairy tale that will keep you entertained from start to finish. Find out what happens when a paranoid king, a poison plot, and hideous shoes prove…it’s not easy being Cinderella!

After saving the life of the glamorous Marquise de Harfleur, painfully shy barmaid Alice Henshawe is employed as the lady’s companion and whisked away to Versailles. There, she catches King Louis’ eye and quickly becomes a court favorite as the muse for Charles Perrault’s Cinderella. The palace appears to be heaven itself, but there is danger hidden beneath the façade and Alice soon finds herself thrust into a world of intrigue, murder, and Satanism at the heart of the French court.

Having left his apprenticeship to serve King Charles as a spy, Jack Sharpe is given a mission that may just kill him. In the midst of the Franco-Dutch war, he is to investigate rumors of a poison plot by posing as a courtier, but he has a mission of his own. His childhood friend Alice Henshawe is missing and he will stop at nothing to see her safe. When he finds her in the company of the very people he is meant to be investigating, Jack begins to wonder if the sweet girl he grew up with has a dark side.

When a careless lie finds them accidentally married, Alice and Jack must rely on one another to survive the intrigues of the court. As old affection gives way to new passion, suspicion lingers. Can they trust each other, or is the real danger closer than they suspect?

Indie Recs: What You Need

I’d highly recommend Landra Graf, and recently I had the chance to read all of her Desperately Seeking Submissive books! They were fantastic reads! (To be noted, they’re part of Decadent Publishing’s 1 Night Stand series)

First off on the line-up is What You Need, and one of the things I loved about this was seeing a variation from the normal dom male, and instead it featured a dominant woman and submissive man. For a novelette, it got straight to the brass tacks, but featured a lot of emotional intensity amidst the raunchy sex. Definitely a worthwhile read.

20803273

A sexual submissive, Royce wants a woman who’ll make his fantasies come true. The last thing he expects on his 1Night Stand is to be paired with Victoria, his ex-best friend. Haunted by their past, he refuses to deny his newfound attraction or his need for answers. This time, he doesn’t plan to let her go.

Victoria has loved Royce forever, but the sting of his rejection is not so easily forgotten. No longer the naïve girl he knew, she’s matured into a sexual dominant. This domme demands a chance to restart their relationship—on her terms. Knowing that one night will never be enough, she plans a seduction that will last forever.

Weekly Word Count #63

Word Count: 10,686 (You can tell I’m nearing the end when my word counts jump up like this.)

What story I’m working on: Rising for Autumn, and I’m at 50k! Only 10,000 more words until I burst past the finish liiinnne and then it’s edits and submission time!

What I’m editing/marketing: Currently editing Night Awakens and Captivating Melody simultaneously. It’s a doozy. As for marketing, I’m pimping the hell out of recently released Scrying for Summer, A Tale of Two Airships, and the Airship Named Desire sale–it’s only 99 cents at the moment!

Line of the week: (MYYYY HEEARRRRRT. This section slayed me.)

The purple sky spread out full of distant promise, the stars twinkling just out of reach. She memorized the proud arch of his nose, those full lips, and the somber eyes of a man who’d experienced enough grief to make anyone a monster. And yet, she’d never met a more caring individual in her life. A thousand words blossomed to her lips and died there, because no amount of speaking could communicate the depths of how he’d affected her. Of how he’d changed her.
