Want to know what music helped inspire this story?
My Spotify playlist consisted of these tracks while I wrote Soul Solution.
1. The Funeral- Band of Horses (The #1 song I played on repeat to write this)
Man, this song breaks my heart every time I hear it. The immense sense of longing and the emotion that saturates this piece made my mind work in overdrive for this story. Mina and Erik’s story is filled with longing, and pain, and even the end isn’t tied up neatly with a bow. So a raw song like this really helped unlock a lot of the laden emotions in Soul Solution.
2. The Good Life- Cracker
This playlist was heavy on music from the 90s, and this was one of my Buffy Unofficial Soundtrack finds. (For the uninitiated, it’s the compilation of all the music played at the Bronze and throughout the show–totally worth finding)
3. Voices- Cheap Trick
I also borrowed heavily from the How I Met Your Mother soundtrack, which was nothing short of legen-waitforit-DARY.
4. Misery- Soul Asylum
In any 90s mix, this is essential.
5. Wild Horses- The Sundays
This was another song that had that note of wistfulness and longing which worked really well while I was writing.
6. It Doesn’t Matter- Alison Krauss and the Union Station
While the scenes between Erik and Mina required tapping into feelings of longing, Erik wore his sadness like a cloak, and this song helped mentally place me in his head.
7. Across the Overpass- The Solids
Fun trivia fact–the Solids did the HIMYM opening. But they also did this more serious song which fit my playlist.
8. Here I Dreamt I was an Architect- The Decemberists
Anyone who’s heard the Decemberists before would find themselves unsurprised to see this on the playlist. They’ve got a gravity to their songs that worked well for the tone of the story.
9. I Will Follow You Into the Dark- Death Cab for Cutie
I really liked the gentleness in this song, and it helped me write the scene where they’re wandering through the trail to find the lake. There’s a quiet sort of somberness, but also that light thrill that comes with the sense of discovery.
10. Virgin State of Mind- K’s Choice
Easily one of my favorite songs to make me think of clubs. Even though it’s not a boom boom song and more of a 90s alt club song.
11. Waiting for an Invitation- Benji Hughes
This song really worked for me in sections where they’d be walking along together chatting. Despite the relaxed nature of the song, there’s a sadness to it too that worked well.
12. Til I Hear it from You- Gin Blossoms
Essential 90s music. Helped put me in the right frame of mind for the more nostalgia laden sections.
13. Simple Song- the Shins
Another HIMYM gem, this was the song I listened to when Mina made the bold decision to try and find him again–it’s the sort of song that inspires.
14. Pretty Girl- Sugarcult
This is one dark and seductive song, and I found myself replaying it more while editing than anything. I love the tone, and I think it works with a lot of Soul Solution.
15. Stupid Thing-Nickel
I really love the sense of regret and helplessness in this song, and it worked so well for a lot of Mina’s moments, where she’s choosing to pursue Erik rather than letting him go.
16. Bohemian Like You- The Dandy Warhols
Another gem from Buffy, this one set a great tone for between the highs and lows of the piece while still conveying that great 90s alt sound.
17. 9 Crimes- Damien Rice
A gorgeous and sad song, this fit some of the more somber moments of the novella. It really helped to put me into the state of regret for the characters.
