What story I’m currently working on:

Well, things changed immensely in the span of a week…I’ve got two proposals due by the end of the month, so I finished my 9k one for the Narnia Club, and I’m 2k into the LGBT heist romantic suspense. Unfortunately that also means that Forged Redemption had to take a backseat for a little while, because this has the more pressing deadline. However, I did still make it to 13k with Forged Redemption, so some forward progress on that book! Holy shit though, I launched myself back into writing in an intense way.

What I’m editing/marketing:

Well shit, guys. The news keeps coming. Hypnotizing Beat just got contracted with Evernight Publishing! And editing is finally taking a backseat while I do some writing, though I’m still working through the initial Rising for Autumn ones. If you’re into some steampunk romance, check out Of Tinkers and Technomancers, which comes out March 12th! And if you’re an audio book fan, you can get the entire Take to the Skies series on audio book now that The Airship Also Rises is out!

The city of love was the last place Luciana Martinez wanted to be.

She leaned hard against the side of the cab, staring out the window as the city flickered by, all boutiques with seafoam green overhangs, and the patisserie windows lit in amber light featuring mouthwatering eclairs and pistachio tarts. Throngs of business professionals strolled along the sidewalks in posh scarves, fitted peacoats, and slim suits. She tugged at the worn duffel bag slung over her shoulder, one she should’ve dropped when she entered but had been clinging to like a security blanket the whole ride over.

Sure, it was Callie’s turn to pick their vacation, and sure, they’d geeked about coming to Paris for years, but man, the fucking timing. Her divorce papers weren’t even old enough to crawl.

Music Monday- In the Eye of the Wind

Hey guys! Let’s welcome Katherine Wyvern today to celebrate her new release, In the Eye of the Wind! She’s going to share her musical inspiration with us!

  1. Loreena McKennitt- Marco Polo

Rikko’s main theme is without a doubt Loreena McKennit’s Marco Polo. It is an instrumental piece with a mixture of western and oriental flavors, and it has a luscious, amorous sort of swagger to it, and all of this is exactly what Rikko’ is about. A character that left the north of this Europe-like world to move into a far freer, sunnier, more sinful city on the southern shores of the Circled Sea. And he’s obnoxiously sexy, of course!

2. Hedningarna- Tass’on nainen

The darker side of Rikko’s character, heritage of a terrible dark-spell laid on his mother before his birth, has its own score, a tremendously powerful, absorbing piece from Hedningarna’s third album, Trä. The name of the song, which has Finnish lyrics, is Täss’on Nainen. Both lyrics and music are haunting, and they fit well this powerful but dangerous darkness Rikko’ carries from the deep North, and also his destiny as a sea-farer.

3. Master and Commander- The Far Side of the World

Much of the sea-chases and battles in the book were imagined with the accompaniment a favourite movie score of mine, the beautiful music for “Master and Commander-The Far Side of the World”. This immediately put me into a sailing frame of mind, and many pieces of the score have a distinctly war-like feel to them, with lots of drums and fifes. Drums mean business, especially in a world where many ships were oar-powered. And the story is heavily inspired by the Master and Commander books, so…

4. La Femme du President

In the Eye of the Wind has a lot of broad, humorous male banter to it, and it was certainly inspiring (and very funny) to listen to traditional mariner’s songs to get into the mood of it. I have a favourite collection of French and Breton ones, and some of them are obviously composed for comical effect and hilariously smutty, like “La Femme du President”, where a wealthy lady invites a sailor to her boudoir for lunch… the lunch lasts three days and three nights, until the seaman leaves, exhausted, not without throwing an irreverent quip at the lady’s husband while on the way out!

5. https://youtu.be/ebYNnZJXCLc

The last song I like to associate with this story is much sunnier piece called “Celebration” by Secret Garden. It’s Gael’s song. I like how it starts small and gentle, almost secretive, to explode into a triumphant, joyous ending.

What are you working on next?

At the moment I am finishing up my new novel A Muse to Live For, which will be published next month. It’s a book very much about inspiration and it also has a Loreena Mc Kennit song as its main theme…

Born in the northern wastes of Kaleva in the middle of a devastating war between light and darkness, Rikko’ has found his way south to the warm shores of the Circled Sea, the first elver to ever turn pirate.

Forbidden by the rules of the Andalouan court to pursue such an ungentlemanly career, Gael can only dream of ever becoming a doctor, and his medical studies remain unfinished until his aunt the Queen sends him on a covert mission to the pirate city of Beyas’kahl.

And here, after one night with Rikko’, all his loyalties are put to the test.

Queen Amata has reigned for three decades, and she always used her men cunningly. But even the best player can miscalculate, and her blunder places Gael first in slavery, then in a naval battle, and finally, worst of all, face to face with Rikko’s darkest and deadliest side.

From such darkness, is there any coming back? Is there any hope of love for Gael, or redemption for Rikko’?

What story I’m currently working on:

Slow but steady on Hypnotizing Beat! I hit 45k on it, and I’m continuing to make my strides forward. With any luck, I’ll finish it by the end of the month or at least by the end of November. However, since things are a bit slow for me lately and it’s still a slog with Hypnotizing Beat, I’m allowing myself to work on Forged Futures once I get my necessary word count done for the Discord’s Desire book. Because I really want to write Lana and Lucas’s story!

What I’m editing/marketing:

I’m currently diving into the final rounds of edits for The Lies We Weave AND even polishing up the query! Right now, I’m less in editing mode and more in buy-buy, sell-sell mode because Bustles and Bells, the steampunk Christmas anthology I’m a part of, is up for pre-order now, as is Forged Alliances which is set to release November 13th!

Even with the nerves running up and down his arms and legs like flame, Trevor allowed himself to grin and laugh with his bandmates. It was hard not to with the ridiculous way Ren piped, headbanging up and down to his own music. Or how Kieran fondled that mic like he owed it a favor. Even Jett dove into the fray, sneaking his own brand of misheard lyrics into their song, pickle instead of fickle, or heartbroken as Hoboken.

Music Monday- Upon Broken Wings

It’s Music Monday time again! This time we’re featuring E.L. Reedy and A.M. Wade with their book Upon Broken Wings!

Inline image

Puscifer – The Humbling River

The river mentioned here: in our book it outwardly symbolizes death: it is a swollen river that takes two lives. But it also symbolizes life: that struggle that we each must face to get to the other side in one piece and ready for whatever comes next.

How To Save A Life – The Fray

To save a life, it is a grief so many in the world, too many, must face—that helpless feeling of guilt that we should have seen the signs, should have recognized the hidden pain of those who chose to journey to the other side before their time. That horrible and indescribable feeling that it was somehow our fault. It is a feeling that dims over time, but never really leaves us.

R.E.M. – Everybody Hurts

Pain and emotional turmoil are a part of life and this song is the most direct, in-your-face way of saying it. Don’t give up or give in. We all hurt but we’re all here to share the pain. The line “No. No. No. We’re not alone,” says it best.

Shinedown – Save Me

This particular song is almost a suicide letter—screaming for help. It mentions drugs, but whatever puts us in such a pit of despair can be anything. The point is that the singer is begging, crying, screaming for help. And the counterpoint is that so many who choose the lonely road never say anything outwardly. And maybe if they did, at least one more life could be saved.

Shinedown – Second Chance

Yes, its’ the same group, but this song says it best. The songwriter wrote this (in his words) as a message to his parents that he was moving on to live his own life. And though we don’t have to move on or move away physically, choosing to face our despair, to change our situation, to ask for help, that is a way to give ourselves a second chance.

Authors–

E. L. Reedy and A. M. Wade: a brother-sister writing team from Iowa. “We wrote Upon Broken Wings to teach that suicide is never the answer and that all it does is spread pain to everyone left behind.”

Our World–

Is a modern-day place of imperfect people, friends and family who both love and fail us, angels who deliver hope, bullies who destroy, and a loving Creator (God, or whatever name we call Him) who offers redemption for even our greatest failures. It is a place of light and shadow, love and hate, and a friendship that lasts even through death.

Our Settings–

Are Purgatory, which looks like a rustic retreat in the country, surrounded by flower gardens and a vast forest; it is the weigh station between Heaven, Hell, and Earth—and The Borderlands, a grey realm between life and death—and finally a small Midwestern town on Earth.

Our Protagonist–

Andrew (14), a high school freshman with Touch Aversion Syndrome, just trying to get through life, stubborn and proud, never asking for help, which leads to his undoing, must ultimately save Kiernan (14), a high school freshman, who attempts suicide after he’s outed as gay and is assaulted by bullies.

Andrew wants to awaken from what he thinks is a dream, but what Andrew needs is to realize that we are all connected and for better or worse, our choices affect everyone in the world around us. If he fails to achieve this understanding, his soul and that of Kiernan’s risk eternal damnation.

Music Monday- On the Ropes

And it’s another Music Monday, this time with Dania Voss and her book, On the Ropes!

39670491

1. Thunderstruck – AC/DC:
The hero Luke Stryker is a star baseball pitcher for the Chicago Cobras, I imagined him walking to the pitcher’s mound to this song.
2. The Way You Look Tonight – Tony Bennett:
This was the first song at Jake and Cassie’s wedding, Abbey the heroine, and Luke became emotional as they watched the bride and groom dance to this song.
3. Unforgettable – Nat King Cole:
Luke and Abbey danced together for the first time in 10 years after a terrible break up to this song at Jake and Cassie’s wedding reception. Even after 10 years apart, they’ve not forgotten each other.
4. We Are Family – Sister Sledge:
Luke and Abbey reunite during a wedding weekend filled with family and friends.
5. Catch My Breath – Kelly Clarkson:
Abbey’s trying to catch her breath and reconcile her feelings after not seeing Luke for 10 years.
What are you currently working on?
Evernight Publishing just recently accepted The Warrior’s Whisper, it’s the followup to On the Ropes.
It’s Heath and Leah’s story who we meet in On the Ropes. Heath is a former Marine who was injured in Afghanistan and he’s known Leah all of her life.  She’s his good friend’s younger sister so he’s always felt she was off limits.

My current WIP is Hannah’s Bliss, the next in my Windy City Nights series that follows The Warrior’s Whisper. It is Rocco and Hannah’s story who are also introduced in On the Ropes. Rocco is a sexy Italian American who also served in Afghanistan and Hannah is an event planner. They come from vastly different backgrounds but will eventually find their way.
On the Ropes

Ten years ago he let her get away. Does he have what it takes to make her his for good?

By all accounts Luke “Strike ‘em Out” Stryker lives a charmed life. He’s won 4 World Series Championship rings and is the Chicago Cobras star pitcher. He’s gorgeous, wealthy and is dating one of Hollywood’s biggest A-list actresses.

But things aren’t always as they appear.

Abbey Jayne has been nursing a broken heart since Luke Stryker betrayed her ten years ago. She’s spent the last ten years focused on her career and education, trying to get over him.

Forced to see him again at her sister’s wedding, Abbey vows to not let Luke ruin her weekend.

An accident days before the wedding has Luke re-evaluating the harsh realities of his life and future. A future that must include his one true love Abbey.

A terrible misunderstanding drove them apart ten years ago, but Luke is determined to win Abbey back by the end of the wedding weekend. He’ll do whatever it takes to convince her they belong together. Failure is not an option.

What story I’m currently working on:

What’s with the pitiful word count, Kat? I know, seriously, I suck. But it’s because I’ve been in editing overdrive mode. I kinda just want to get something off my plate because balancing 4 books (2 writing and 2 editing) is stupid. But I made it to 11k with Hypnotizing Beat and I’m starting to vibe with the book again, so yay. Plus, once I get another project off my plate, I might try writing both Hypnotizing Beat and Forged Contracts at the same time. I really miss my Red Rock Pack ❤

What I’m editing/marketing:

I’ve got more news, guys! Soul Mate just picked up book two in my Coven Chronicles series, so the only books still homeless are 3 and 4. I’m prepping the synopsis for submission as we speak. Also, Captivating Melody is OUT, so grab your copy today! So, if I wasn’t writing this week, what was I doing? Not taking it easy, lol. I have been throwing myself full force into these edits, and I was originally hoping to finish them today, but it looks more like I’ll finish up with them at least by check-in next week. So that will be awesome. I put Musketeer Pirates in the editing backseat at the moment, but it’s still on my docket and I’m still working on it slowly and steadily. If you’re waiting for Colors of a Soul, my Little Mermaid retelling, pre-order Legends of the Veil!

Line of the week:

“If you keep burning the midnight aisle like this, I’m going to dub you the Ghost of Guitarist’s Past,” Ky set to yanking down the window behind the seats. Even though they’d parked in a dump of a lot with a bunch of beater vehicles and sketch neighbors, those desperate neons from the strip still tried their damndest to cut through the early morning grey.

“Who can sleep with the way you and Liz go at it?” Trevor muttered, reaching for one of Ren’s crumpled shirts he left strewn all through the floor of the RV. Trevor tossed it to Kieran. “Do us a favor and cover yourself up. The adoring fans aren’t here to see the show.”

Captivating Melody Release Day!

Captivating-Melody-evernightpublishing-JUNE2018-evernightbanner_preview

God, I’m so thrilled for my first release with Evernight Publishing and the first book in the Discord’s Desire series! Get your copy HERE!

Cross a satyr, a siren, and an incubus with rock and roll, and you get Discord’s Desire, a band of panty-dropping hellions whose live shows incite orgies. As booking manager, Liz O’Brien has the monumental task of keeping the boys in line. She’s resistant to glamour of the fae and fame variety, which only makes her more tempting to lead singer, Kieran Blackmore. With his incubus charms, he could have any girl he wants—except Liz, who’s determined to stay professional.

However, when Kieran’s brother sends hitmen after the band, Liz discovers hunters with her abilities who are mortal enemies of the fae. Mercenaries might attack post-show, but Liz has her Beretta to handle that. What terrifies her more than any monster is how she’s falling for Kieran, which triggers every ‘run-away’ sensor in her foster kid handbook. With war brewing between the hunters and the fae, their love can only end in heartbreak.

“Maybe being surrounded by rockstars has me looking for a regular guy.” Liz locked gazes with Kieran, challenge flashing in her eyes. The poor bartender was getting dragged into batt

To her relief, the lights dimmed even more, and the spotlights circled to the front and center stage, casting a hush through the crowd. A smile curled her lips once Kieran’s sultry voice came over the speakers, the effects dropping like a pheromone bomb onto the audience. A visible ripple didn’t cascade through the air, but once his voice reached a familiar intensity and the rest of the band began playing, a huge scream resounded through the crowd.

Even without the incubus abilities at work, she had to admit, the man possessed a toe-curlingly sexy voice. As she scanned over the crowd, the beginnings of the orgy broke out, where strangers locked lips and deepened their kisses. A pair in front of her started getting handsy, and all of a sudden shirts were coming off. They weren’t even finished the first song, and the scent of sex laced through the room.

Liz let out a sigh. This was why she stayed backstage during the shows. Her glamour-resistance turned her into the one sober person at this lust inspired rager. Her dry spell would have to continue for now since she refused to hook up with the tool next to her and didn’t mainline the swell of sexuality like everyone else. Plus, with Mr. Fae Bartender behind her, she needed to act with extra caution. Bolting from fae sent the same message as a red flag to a bull—pretty please, come chase me.

On stage, Trevor thrummed away at the guitar, his fingers plucking over the strings with the skillful focus he always employed. He leaned up to the mic in front of him to add in the background vocals, the sensual tenor blending with Ky’s baritone. Renn’s hair flew as he thrashed away at the drums, his hands moving lightning fast and his hooves tapping the pedals. Meanwhile Jett romanced the length of his bass, providing the deep undercurrent the siren always did as those notes came out soul-wrenching.

Kieran’s voice reached a crescendo, drawing her attention front and forward. Normally when he sang, his gaze cast far and wide over the audience, as if he were romancing the crowd as a whole, but tonight, his eyes were locked on one person alone. She tried to swallow, but her throat grew dry.

Long strands of his dark hair drifted across his eyes as he clutched the microphone and rocked back and forth with it, the intensity projecting in his voice. He’d tossed his patched leather to the floor, stripped to a black wifebeater that clung to him like a second skin and revealed the intricate phoenix tattoo coiling down his arm. His hips shifted while he moved to the beat of the music, his grey jeans clinging to those powerful thighs. Yet nothing snared her as much as his amber eyes focused straight on her the entire time.

Heat flushed through her at his undivided attention, and while she’d like to blame it on all the bump and grind going on around her, Kieran got her hot and bothered. However, she wasn’t one to sit back and melt. Liz met his eyes and winked with a smirk. She caught the hint of a smile by the crinkle in his eyes as he crooned away.
