Music Monday- Chalvaren Rising

Want the perfect playlist to accompany the book you’re reading? Well, Music Mondays gives the authors a chance to weigh in on the music that inspired said story!

Today let’s welcome Paula Millhouse to discuss Chalvaren Rising!

Chalvaren Rising_FINALHere’s the novel playlist for Chalvaren Rising: https://play.spotify.com/user/pmillhouse.1/playlist/48pM8IoZwVaNjbiVvG5J0A

Music is such an amazing part of the arts. It inspires my creativity and often embodies the perfect emotions for my characters. I often write to movie instrumentals, but these five songs from the novel playlist inspired tons of scenes.

1) Leader of Men by Nickleback because in the beginning of Chalvaren Rising Elf Price Kort Elias questions the notion that he’s the kind of man to lead his kingdom. But, by the end of the story Mia gives him the incentive he needs to be the leader of his men, the dragon riders of Chalvaren.

2) I See Fire by Ed Sheeran because these characters all love their dragons so much. When I first heard this song from the movie The Hobbit, I could not get it out of my head. It fits Chalvaren Rising because the castle with the most dragons wins.

3) Feeling Way Too Damn Good by Nickleback because it fits the angsty magic of the romance between Kort and Mia.

4) Far Away by Nickleback because Kort loves Mia so much his whole world is focused on her being his princess. He loves her, and if he loses her he won’t be able to breathe.

5) A Thousand Years because when I first heard this song I knew there were two lovers in my heart I had to tell a story about. Yes, Bella and Edward from Twilight commanded the song, but Mia and Kort embody the romance and beauty of this timeless tune. Time does stand still for these elves, and every time I hear this song I think of Mia and Kort. They have loved each other for a thousand years. They believed in each other, weathered every storm thrown at them, and in the end they will love each other for a lifetime. Just wait until you read the final scene of the novel.

My next project on the horizon is a romantic suspense where a female FBI agent teams up with a Mafia hit man to take a killer down who has both their names on the top of his list.

Chalvaren Rising

With the love of Kort, Chalvaren’s warrior-prince heir, Mia Ansgar will seize her birthright and become the great dragon-riding wizardess prophesied to free that elven kingdom from her embittered sorceress kin.

TO ASCEND TRIUMPHANT

Twenty-five years ago, Theo Ansgar abandoned the Kingdom of Chalvaren for a hiding place on another world. Some called him traitor. Some, thief. Now his fully grown daughter Mia must return to the land of her birth…and their war.

It was the elf prince Kort Elias who brought her back. Theirs was an instant connection, an inescapable union of body, soul and sorcery, reminding Mia of what she truly is, and what she must become. There is also Magnus, destined to be more potent than any wyrm Chalvaren has ever seen, a three-day-old dragonlet Mia must nurture and then ride. And then there is the Dragonstone, an artifact of power nonpareil. Joined, they can tip the scales of battle against the wraith-possessed forces of darkness, of Mia’s own embittered kin. Redemption will be offered, the protected will become the protector, and an ancient prophecy will come to fruition, but only righteous love can conquer all.

August 2015 Obsessions

What have I been tuning into during August? Well, I’ve been reading Terry Brooks’ Genesis of Shannara series which is quite delightful. I have to admit, I completely forgot how much I love getting wrapped into a high fantasy series, even though it requires the patience to weather through the setup. I admit though, I’ve been pining for a good YA book or urban fantasy series as of late.

However, this month has turned into the month of reading! I managed to read the first and second of the Genesis of Shannara books and followed that up with Shootout at Roulement Ridge by Einar Mercier, Dragonstone by Paula Millhouse, and What You Need by Landra Graf. It’s been a basking in indie authors sort of month, and I’m thrilled to read the works of such talented individuals. August has done a good job of reminding me of my favorite obsession: reading.

To cap it off though, even if you haven’t read the books, I think any fantasy fan can get excited about the Shannara show that’s airing this upcoming January.

Meet the Writer Wednesday- Paula Millhouse

It’s that time of week again, where we get to know more of the kickass talent out there! As someone who loves meeting people, particularly creative people, this post has been a joy, and I’ve found everyone’s answers fascinating!

Today let’s welcome Paula Millhouse!

Paula Millhouse 2015

What writing quote means the most to you?

Via the awesome Chuck Wendig: “Finish your shit.” While at first his words may sound crass, the truth is in the quote for writers. You started that story. Finish it. That’s the only way through. Writers write. End of discussion.

Ha, I love that! Couldn’t agree more. What about inspiration? Where do you draw it from?

Writing is my therapy, my way back to myself, a sort-of Zen meditation if you will. This crazy old world can challenge the best and the worst in us, and writing helps me diffuse. Temperance is a value I hold dear – the philosophy that we should take it for granted that people act for good despite their circumstances.

Out of all the characters you’ve written, are there any you’re so attached to that you could write stories about them forever?

My dragonlet Magnus is my favorite character. He’s young, and full of whimsy, and adventure with so much to learn about the world. He’s got this huge destiny, but he’s just this intelligent youngling thrown into an impossible situation. I think I could write about him discovering his world forever.

For those curious, we have a picture!

For many of us, we travel through our writing, but when it comes to real life vacations, do you have a dream one?

A cruise on the Mediterranean Sea to visit the Greek Isles. The landscape there, and the history fascinates me. Not to mention the food, and the Ouzo! Second choice – Scotland.

Any projects you’re really excited to share with us?

Chalvaren Rising, my first professionally edited and produced Fantasy Romance novel with Boroughs Publishing Group. I blended the genres, and while traditional bookstores might have a hard time shelving the novel, it seems like the perfect marriage of story to me. Most fantasy books don’t have enough romance for me, and I find magic lacking in most straight romances. Hey, all those Hobbits and Elves and Dragons had to come from somewhere, right?

That sounds fantastic! Not going to lie, I’m intrigued–I feel the same way about blending fantasy and romance. When you’re taking a break from writing, what TV shows do you check out?

I gotta go with The Big Bang Theory. Just enough Geek there to make me smile, and the humor is huge – exactly what I need after a hard day at work. I’m a recovering Outlander. Honestly, I still haven’t decided if I’ll give Starz another chance next season after the last two episodes.

What about in the book-o-sphere?

I’m currently reading The Book of Life by Deborah Harkness. I enjoyed Marilyn Baxter’s Direct Deposit, a great contemporary. And I just picked up Solid Ground – the premise sounds perfect for my kind of story.

The Book of Life looked pretty intriguing–let me know how it is! And I hope you enjoy Solid Ground : ) Now to my favorite question–what’s your zodiac sign?

Aquarius. It’s true, I can never make up my mind, and as a character flaw, I’ll admit I can hold a grudge for over a year if you cross me. I’m working on that with respect to my goal of Temperance…

Are there any pet peeves that will make you put a book down?

The heroine who’s too stupid to live. I know we’ve got to showcase internal conflict as writers, but nothing drives me battier than a woman who can’t make up her mind. I appreciate kick-ass heroines who harbor dark secrets and aren’t afraid to act on good instincts. I love to read about gals who know who/what they want, and go for it despite the odds.
