When Kara was ten, the shifters took her parents.

A year ago, they took her best friend Hunter.

And now, the night before her first military strike against those monsters on the surface, the shifters take the only person she has left: her little sister Lizzy.

The snatched don’t come back. That’s what Kara’s believed her entire life, but the first person she finds above ground is the best friend she thought lost forever. Turns out, the higher ups lied. Other colonies are out there, hell even folks who toughed it up above. If anyone knows how to get her sister back, these people would. However, unless she can rally these surfacers into an army, one girl with a shotgun won’t survive long against the very creatures that overturned her world.

Indie Recs: When Dark Falls

I had stumbled on When Dark Falls by Pippa Jay, and thoroughly enjoyed this superhero read. The worldbuilding is top notch imaginative, and I loved the way the mystery of the story unwound while the romance built. It’s definitely a stand out scifi romance book and well worth your time.

In a city where Dark Technologies Inc. now runs the show, Kadie Williams has more immediate concerns than the fall of Blaze, their guardian superhero. Almost every morning for the last few months she’s woken up with cuts and bruises on her body, and no idea how she got them. There are no nightmares. No evidence that she sleepwalks, or any sign of a break in. And nothing to tell her who’s been cleaning up after her. As just one of thousands of civilians conscripted to slave away in the labs of Professor Dark, she knew there’d be trouble ahead. But she never expected it to be so bad, or so personal.

Desperate for answers, Kadie looks to the new defender of the night, the only person who can hinder the total domination of Professor Dark—Nocturnelle. The mysterious vigilante superhero came from nowhere with her cybernetic sidekick Shadow, set on putting an end to the brutality of Dark’s regime. But as his laboratories work on a new secret super-weapon, Nocturnelle and Shadow may not be enough to save Nephopolis…or to save Kadie either.

Excerpt from Snatched

Lizzy’s brown eyes gleamed under the shaky flame of the candle. “What was it like topside?” Curiosity bubbled to the surface, like I knew it would. Lizzy’s head teemed with sparkles and nonsense from all the wonders my mom had crammed her head with when we were kids. At first the decimated slums up above had disappointed me, but after watching a bird soar through the sky and feeling the breeze on my cheeks, a thrill burned inside me again that I thought had died with my parents.

Snatched Excerpt

The darkened boughs of the overhead trees snuffed out the faint rays from the moon. Twigs and brush crunched underneath our boots, but we kept the silence as much as possible, even Dinah. Hunter groped around, feeling his way past low-lying tree branches and full bushes. My dimensional restraint cast a reddish glow on my arm, and some of the light trailed onto the ground in front of me. I listened for the thrash of moving bushes, the snapping of branches—anything to prevent another wildlife ambush, or worse, a shifter porting in on us. Getting torn limb from limb would put a damper on my night.

Throwback Thursday: 8/20/15

IMG_1744Always attempting cosplay, even if it’s slapped together at the last second. This was a viper pilot costume from Battlestar Galactica I’d thrown on after a Goodwill trip. It was for a SciFi party my friend was hosting, and so of course I had to come dressed up. I’ll take any excuse, really.

Book Quote:

“Harsh, bitter laughs exploded from her like shrapnel, and she didn’t care who was cut in the process.”
